Plumber Newstead

200+ five-star Google reviews

Plumber Newstead is the unit-block run of Plumber Bowen Hills: hot water, blocked drains, burst hoses and gas faults between Breakfast Creek and the Brisbane River. At the last census, 99.2 per cent of homes here were flats or units, so most of our work happens inside towers, their plant rooms and their shared risers.

Plumbing on Old Gasworks Ground

This was industrial riverfront once. Gasworks, wharves, woolstores and timber yards lined Breakfast Creek Road, the second gasworks opened in 1887, and cargo moved across the wharves until 1969.

Redevelopment from 2001 turned that land into riverside apartments and townhouses, and the earliest of those buildings have now reached the age where their original hot water systems are failing.

What that means for plumbing work here:

  • Cylinders carried through finished buildings. The early-2000s towers beside the heritage gas holder and along the wharf frontage need tanks moved through foyers and lifts, with strata sign-off for anything touching common areas.
  • Wet, acidic ground. Council mapped acid sulfate soil across much of Newstead back in 1997, so a hole that reaches the water table can turn acidic as it dries, and that eats into buried steel and concrete.
  • Drains with nowhere to push. Stormwater lines went in before this low ground could be built on, and their outlets run to a creek and a river whose levels can hold them under water.

The Gasworks precinct's restaurants, cafes and supermarket push commercial grease into shared drains. That is a different job from the wipes and root growth of a quiet residential street, and we clear both.

A dead tank in a unit off Skyring Terrace or Longland Street is a strata-and-lift job before it is a plumbing one, and we plan the carry before we quote it.

Newstead Plumbing Questions

Call (07) 3067 4276

Who owns the water pipes in a Newstead apartment?

Urban Utilities looks after the street mains and sewer beneath the road, pipes within your unit fall to you or your landlord, and the body corporate is responsible for anything in a common riser.

Can a burst hose in a Newstead tower damage the units below?

It can, because a braided hose that lets go sends water down the service ducts through several floors, so shut your unit stop valve first and ring (07) 3067 4276 straight away.

Do I need body corporate approval before hot water work in my unit?

Usually yes, because a replacement cylinder often travels through common areas and sits on common property, so we set the scope out plainly for your strata manager to sign off.

Why do the stormwater drains near Breakfast Creek back up?

The outlets discharge to Breakfast Creek and then the Brisbane River, so a king tide or a flood peak can hold them down and leave street pits unable to clear until the level outside drops.

Does acid sulfate soil complicate digging in Newstead?

It can, because Council flagged acid sulfate soil over much of Newstead in 1997, so any excavation deep enough to hit the water table risks releasing acidic water that corrodes buried pipes and footings.

How do I book a plumber for a unit in Newstead?

Ring (07) 3067 4276 with your street and the problem, and we will arrange a visit, arrive with the parts the job likely needs and quote a fixed price before starting.
